Biographical / Historical Note
Anna Hempstead Branch, American poet, was born to Mary Lydia Bolles and John Locke Branch on March 18, 1875, in New London, Connecticut. She graduated from Smith College (1897) and the American Academy of Dramatic Art, in New York City (1900) and was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree from Smith College in 1934. Branch was involved with Christodora House (a settlement house located in New York City) where she founded the Poets Guild with Edwin Arlington Robinson, Percy MacKaye, William Rose Benet, and Margaret Widdemer. She also authored several poetry books, including Heart of the Road, The Shoe That Danced, and Nimrod. She died in 1937.
