William E. Hawks, born circa 1864, resided in Bennington, Vermont, and authored western fiction, some of which was published in the serial Cowboy Stories.
Summary
The correspondence consists of autograph letters from residents of the American West that include memoirs of people and events, including the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857. The letters are among those that informed Hawks's fictional portrayals of cowboy life in his short stories. Correspondents include James Hatch, W. W. Howard, and Clark B. Stocking.
