Biographical / Historical Note
James Weale (1787-1838) was employed by the Earl of Sheffield for some years, and finished his career as Principal Clerk of the Crown Commissioners of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues in Ireland (1826-1838). He was married to Susan Caroline de Vezean Weale (died 1855); their son, James Weale (1832-1917) was a noted scholar of Flemish painting.
Summary
Autograph manuscript diary detailing the daily life and activities of James Weale while he was a member of the Earl of Sheffield's household at Sheffield Place in Sussex. Entries include references to his work with Sheffield, probably assisting him in sorting the papers of Edward Gibbon; Weale's extensive reading in ancient history, particularly of the Roman Empire; disputes with other members of the Weale family; and notes on conversations with visitors and comments on political and social issues, including the rumors concerning the private life of the Princess of Wales, military developments, Parliamentary debates, and the "insubordination" of the local poor. Weale also reports extensively on his eventually successful negotiations with Lord and Lady Sheffield over the conditions of his employment, particularly his desire for a private bedroom and chamber to avoid having to socialize with "the upper servants."
