Biographical / Historical Note
Richard J. Hinton was born in London, England and immigrated to the United States in 1851. He worked in New York as a printer, surveyor, and newspaper reporter before migrating to Kansas in 1856. He was an abolitionist and supported the free state cause, and he joined the Union Army in 1862 and retired as a colonel in 1865. He died in London in 1901.

Photographic prints of Hinton family members, a scrapbook on the life of Richard J. Hinton, and newspaper clippings on Hinton's military and abolitionist activities comprise the Richard J. Hinton Family Papers. The papers are accompanied by a 1940 letter about Hinton family history from Arthur Richard Hinton to Margaret Sousa Hinton; both were descendents of Richard J. Hinton.
