Biographical / Historical Note
Andrew B. Jackson was born in Wolcott, Connecticut, on February 14, 1814, the son of Orrin and Hannah Frisbie Jackson. In 1836 he married Mary A. Bassett of New Haven, Connecticut, and the couple migrated to Racine County in the Wisconsin Territory. Jackson served in the territorial legislature in 1846 and in 1847 was a member of the constitutional convention leading to Wisconsin statehood in 1848. In 1856 Jackson moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, and in 1861 to Menasha, where he was appointed register of the United States land office. He spent his retirement years engaged in land development in suburban Chicago, Illinois, first in Evanston (1869-1876) and then in nearby Rogers Park, where he was a partner in the Rogers Park Land and Building Company. Andrew B. Jackson died on March 25, 1878, survived by his wife and their four children, E. Gilbert (born 1838), Andrew (born 1841), Mary E. (born 1844), and William O. (born 1851). The two older sons studied at Lawrence University, served in the Civil War, and had careers in land development and lumbering in Wisconsin; William O. Jackson attended Northwestern University and became a citrus farmer in southern California.
Summary
The papers contain business and personal correspondence of Andrew B. Jackson, with the bulk of the letters regarding land sales, development, and management in Wisconsin, as well as invoices for goods and services (1846-1878). Personal correspondence and financial papers (1835-1877) include letters sent between Jackson and family members, and letters to the Jackson family from friends in Connecticut. Letters written during the Civil War period mention the war; one dated September 16, 1865, warns Jackson of specific "copper heads and deserters" who may try to preempt land in Menasha.
The papers also contain the business correspondence and financial papers (1876-1899) of Andrew Jackson, Jr., and a small number of items (1913-1929) belonging to his son, Carl Dewitt Jackson. Also present are eighteen undated printed township/range diagrams with manuscript annotations showing lots for sale in Wisconsin, a printed broadside advertising an auction of lots and houses in Evanston, Illinois (1871), and six legal documents (1871-1881). Accompanied by one copy of Catalogus Collegii Yalensis (1811), a booklet for military personnel at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia (1945), and a map entitled Map of Rogers Park...Cook Co. Ill. (circa 1870s).
