Biographical / Historical Note
Waldemar Schreyer was born in Germany in April 1842. He immigrated from Hannover to New York on board the steamer Harmonia in 1870. Schreyer settled in Brooklyn and made a career as an artist and illustrator; he remained in Brooklyn until his death on November 18, 1913. Schreyer had five children with his wife Jacobine Schreyer (1849-1928) and was active in many charitable organizations. Immigration documents, census records, and city directories record his name as Waldemar Schreyer, or Waldemar G. H. Schreyer, through 1903; after that date, and in his obituary, he is listed as Gottfried H. W. Schreyer.
