Biographical / Historical Note
George T. Downing (1819-1903), entrepreneur and civil rights activist.
Summary
Scrapbook containing clippings and personal papers dating from 1860 to 1875. Inscribed: "A 'Scrap' from Geo T. Downing to his daughter Rebecca M. Downing, Newport, January 1, 1875." The scrapbook inlcudes Downing's letters to the editor and news about the Downing family and friends. Topics also include civil rights, prominent African-Americans, and world history, as well as humorous observations on love and marriage. Documents belonging to Rebecca M. Downing can also be found in the scrapbook; these include a certificate acknowledging seven bags sewn by Downing for Civil War soldiers (1861) and a certificate confirming her attendance at the Winthrop School in Boston (1862). The scrapbook also includes a photograph of an unidentified ruin and a photograph of a child in a small carriage pulled by two goats. A letter of condolence (dated March 1890) to Downing from Joseph A. Smith concerning the death of Downing's daughter Georgina Downing is part of the scrapbook.
