John Howard Payne, an American actor, poet, playwright, and author who had most of his theatrical career and success in London. He was born in New York City on June 9, 1791 and died in Tunis, Tunisia on April 10, 1852.

Correspondence, most autograph letters, signed, from Anna Mary Freeman to Payne, undated and bound; and from Payne to T. Barclay, draft, 1818 July 20; to William A. Beckett, 1818 March 21; an autograph letter, signed, to S. G. Drake, dated 1838 September 13; an autograph letter, signed, to "My dear J," dated 1822 September 23; two autograph letters, signed, to Reverend E. Mangin, dated 1817 April 5 and 15; an autograph note, signed, to Jonathan Meredith, dated 1833 September 5; an autograph letter, signed, to Colonel George P. Morris, dated 1833 February 23. Also included in the collection is a manuscript leaf from Payne's letter book, with an autograph letter, signed, from Payne to United States Secretary of State John Middleton Clayton, followed by autograph copies of manuscript letters, signed, to Clayton from Washington Irving and W. C. Hunter, dated 1849 April 4; and a manuscript draft of an advertisement for Payne's play Thérèse, undated.
