Biographical / Historical Note
Georges Hugnet, French poet and critic associated with Surrealism. Author of Enfances (Paris: Editions "Cahiers d'Art," [1933]), a collection of poems that initially was a collaboration with Gertrude Stein. Stein published an English version, Before the Flowers of Friendship Faded Friendship Faded (Paris, Plain Edition, [1931]).
Summary
The collection contains drafts relating to Enfances, other writings and notes by Hugnet, and correspondence. Materials relating to Enfances consist of a typescript carbon, two copies, corrected, 1929; and an English translation, typescript, corrected, undated; also present is a printed publisher's advertisement (Paris: Éditions Jeanne Bucher, 1931). Other writings, most undated, include “La belle en dormant” and other poems set to music by Virgil Thomson, typescripts; Onan, poem, typescript carbon; notes for L'aventure Dada (1916-1922) (Paris: Galerie de l'Institut, 1957), autograph manuscript, circa 1955-1957; notes about Dadaism; and unidentified notes. Correspondence consists of three autograph letters, signed, from Hugnet to René Laporte, undated; one from Hugnet to Christian Zervos, [1928], about Hugnet's poem Commode, accompanied by a copy of the poem, typescript; facsimiles of four letters from Jacques Vaché to Hugnet, illustrated with drawings, 1917-1918; and two unidentified letters, 1939 and undated.
