Summary
Manuscript ledger in the hand of an unidentified general goods merchant in Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa. The merchant records sales of carpets, textiles, clothing, housewares, hardware, ammunition, farm goods, and food. The merchant notes accepting whiskey, wheat, butter, and eggs for credit and records details of operating a money exchange. The merchant also notes business exchanges with steamboat crewsmen and passengers on the Mississippi River, including Alexander Clark, possibly the Iowa civil rights leader and businessman.
