Summary
Collection of bibliographic information, clippings, correspondence, printed materials, and writings relating to American author and humorist Finley Peter Dunne and his "Mr. Dooley" sketches. Bibliographic information includes manuscript notes and a title index of Dunne's published articles put together by Allen. Correspondence consists of letters between Allen and Dunne's sons, Finley Peter Dunne, Jr., and Philip Dunne, dating from 1963 to the early 1990s, and others, as well some some third-party letters. Additional correspondents include Edwin Newman, Barbara Schaaf, and WGBH. Writings include drafts, autograph manuscript, corrected and bound, of Dunne's "Mr. Dooley on the Ending of a Romance" and "Mr. Dooley on Ocean Travel" (box 2) and what appear to be transcriptions, typescript carbon, of Mr. Dooley sketches organized by topics, such as athetics, education, politics, war, and women's rights. Documents show that Allen investigated and then collaborated, with Max Morath, on a television program based on Dunne's Mr. Dooley character.
