Biographical / Historical Note
Nicholas Ray, merchant, born in New York on June 2, 1716, the son of Richard Ray (died 1737) and Elsey Saunders (died 1746). Ray died in London on September 24, 1788.
Richard Ray, merchant in New York, born January 15, 1753, the son of Richard Ray (1717-1763) and Sarah Bogart Ray (1728-1781). He died on October 25, 1783.
Summary
Autograph manuscript of sixteen instructive and autobiographical letters by Nicholas Ray, writing from London and addressing his young nephew Richard Ray in New York. In his letters Ray recounts his arrival at St. Eustatius on November 3, 1739, his experiences in the West Indies trade, and his travels through Europe and England before he settled in London. Ray also transcribes letters he published in London newspapers under the signatures of “Americus” and “Britanicus.”
