Seth Bullock (1849-1919), sheriff of Deadwood, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory and hardware store owner.
Summary
Correspondence, legal records, financial records, writings, personal papers, and political papers documenting Seth Bullock's service as sheriff of Deadwood, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory. Military records and writings document Bullock's service as a soldier in the Black Hills Expedition, North Dakota and a 1876 trip to Yellowstone Park. Criminal records include files and correspondence on Robert "Little Reddy" McKimie, William Webster, and other law enforcement issues, including liquor licenses. Political papers include documentation on sheriff appointments, the organization of Lawrence County, and admission of North and South Dakota to the United States. Mining records include certificates of ownership in gold mining companies in South Dakota. Ephemera includes a broadside for Deadwood Theatre, 1876, business cards, and tickets to President Theodore Roosevelt's 1905 inauguration. A photograph by C. B. Harlon shows Bullock and others on horseback in town. Also includes papers documenting Solomon Star's election as mayor of Deadwood and Star's business operations as a hardware store owner.
Box 1 contains the correspondence and bills. Box 2 contains the court records, subpoenas, summons, warrants, commitment records, coroner records, and criminal records. Box 3 contains the writings, military records, personal papers, political papers, mining records, photograph, and Solomon Star papers.
