Biographical / Historical Note
Judith Fernando Cimaglia, trained as an artist, was working for the Department of Anatomy at Yale, where she prepared donated cadavers before and after dissection by medical students. Yale professor of anatomy Edmund S. Crelin, who studied the anatomy of newborns, asked her to make drawings of specimens of fetal malformations from the collection of anatomical specimens then on the third floor of Sterling Hall of Medicine. Crelin was preparing a book that would utilize the drawings, but the project fell through. Judith Cimaglia changed her name to Judith Zunder when she married Brandon Zunder (d. 2013). After she died, Brandon Zunder gave the drawings to his close friend George Moore for further research and possible exhibit at the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library where Moore was employed.
