Biographical / Historical Note
John Chandler Griffin was a professor at the University of South Carolina. His research focused on the American Civil War, Jean Toomer, and John F. Kennedy.
Jean Toomer was a poet and novelist. He was born on December 28, 1894 in Washington D.C. and died on March 30, 1967 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. His novel, Cane, published in 1923, solidified him as a leading literary figure of the Harlem Renaissance. He also wrote essays and collections of poetry.
