Biographical / Historical Note
Mary A. Brown (1826-1904) and James H. Brown (1831-1912) had 2 children: J. Thomas Brown (1857-1915) and Bettie Brown (1870-1873). In 1875, the family moved from Wadesburg, Missouri, to Prescott, Arizona Territory, and started a farm.

11 autograph letters, signed, from Mary A. Brown and her son, J. Thomas Brown, to family in Missouri, 1870 August 7-1885 April 7. Letters mention the Brown family's health, the death of Bettie Brown, and the progress of James H. Brown's farm in Prescott, Arizona Territory. Also mentioned is the presence of Chinese laborers in Prescott. Included is a post-mortem carte-de-visite photograph of Bettie Brown, 1873.
