Summary
Scrapbook and term paper created by Donald L. Wiedner. The scrapbook documents Wiedner's trip from New York City to Mexico and Guatemala with the American Friends Service Committee of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from June 21-September 2, 1949. Wiedner gives an account of the journey, describing details of daily life, the relief and service work he and his group engaged in, and the sites the group visited throughout the trip. Included in the scrapbook are circa 207 photographs, nine loose photographs, and 30 postcards, chiefly black and white, depicting: informal portraits of Wiedner and his traveling companions; locations in Texas, including San Antonio; locations in Mexico, including Cuernavaca, Mexico City and its environs, Nativitas, and Oaxaca de Juárez; and locations in Guatemala, including Guatemala City. The scrapbook also contains: one printed map of Guatemala City; two manuscript maps of the Xochimilco and Acapulco areas of Mexico; ephemera, including postage stamps, tickets, and concert programs; clippings from American newspapers, including information about the political situation in Guatemala and the spread of communism in the Caribbean and Central America; and a copy of a report by Norman J. Whitney about his visits to the American Friends Service Committee's projects in Mexico, dated October 1949. The term paper is a typescript copy of Wiedner's "Diplomatic Relations Great Britain and Mexico 1822-1854", submitted to Professor C. H. Haring's History 274b class at Harvard University in May, 1953.
