Autograph manuscript logbook for the U.S.S. Ohio in the hand of Edwin Osgood Carnes, 1846 December-1849 May. Entries record weather conditions, navigation, and daily activities on the ship, including discipline and a court-martial. Early entries describe supplying the ship in Boston, the Ohio's voyage from Boston to Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Governor of Virginia William Smith's visit to the ship. Later entries describe the Ohio's involvement in the Battle of Veracruz in 1847, notably a firsthand account of the battle and the Mexican surrender, a drawing of the U.S.S. Ohio firing on a schooner, and a copy of a letter from Matthew C. Perry about the victory at Veracruz. Carnes also describes voyages to Havana, Cuba; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Valparaíso, Chile; Callao, Peru; Mazatán, Mexico; Guaymas, Mexico; La Paz, Mexico; Monterey, California; and San Francisco, California. Carnes records the desertion of dozens of sailors in California due to the economic prospects of the California Gold Rush, including a verbatim officer's address about discipline which sailors were required to copy to prevent further desertions.
The volume includes nautical charts of the Chesapeake Bay, Veracruz, Havana, Rio de Janeiro, Valparaíso, Mazatán, Monterey, and San Francisco. Also present are drawings of Veracruz, Rio de Janeiro, Clarion Island, and Cabo San Lucas.
