Walter White (1893-1955), civil rights activist and secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

The correspondence consists of seven letters between Walter White and Robert R. Gros, dated between April and October, 1943, which discuss Gros and White's differing opinions on the African American press. White wrote four letters and Gros wrote three letters. Also included is one cover letter from Doris Washington attached to a letter from White to Gros. White also forwarded one of Gros's letters to Roscoe Dunjee, of the Black Dispatch, a Oaklahoma newspaper. In his letters, Gros presents his opinion that the African American press, especially newspapers, is to blame for how African Americans are percieved in society due to the sensational nature of the press. White, enlists the help of other newspaper editors to write short statements on the African American press's merits, as well as provides his own insight over the course of their correspondence, to contribute evidence as a rebuttal to Gros's stance.
