Dovie Mae Wilkes was a student at Langston University, a historically black university in Langston, Oklahoma, circa 1924-1926.
Summary
Two disbound scrapbooks documenting Dovie Mae Wilkes's life as a student at Langston University, circa 1924-1926. Includes circa 129 photographs of Wilkes with friends and family members, some identified in captions. Photographs depict people at social events, in United States military uniforms, and with automobiles. Near the back of the second scrapbook are 32 portraits of students in graduation caps and gowns, likely clipped from a yearbook. The scrapbooks also include postcards, valentines, a manuscript invitation to a party, a telegram, and a copy of the Langston University school song. Throughout are clippings from Langston University promotional publications, including images of the school's cadet corps, patriotic parades, several buildings on campus, and carpentry, home economics, and printing classes. Captions include pencil annotations and clippings from newspapers and other printed sources.
