Biographical / Historical Note
Sir Everard Home (1756-1832) was a British surgeon.
Sir James Everard Home (1798-1853) was a British naval officer and the son of Sir Everard Home.
William Clift (1775-1849) was a British scientific illustrator and museum curator. He was employed by Sir Everard Home to illustrate his scientific writings.
Summary
Manuscript letter books, in the hand of William Clift, containing fair copies of letters sent by Sir Everard Home to his son Sir James Everard Home, circa 1820. The first volume, titled "Letters from My Father, from the Year 1810", includes letters dated March 1810-October 1816; the second volume, titled "Letters from My Father, from the Year 1816", includes letters dated November 1816-October 1820. The letters discuss day-to-day matters; Everard Home's work as a surgeon; current events and political matters; and James Home's naval career. With a watercolor view by an unidentified artist of a tidal flat and town, titled "Lancing", affixed opposite the title page of volume two.
