Summary
The scrapbook includes over 300 pieces of design, including drawings, tracings, studio scraps, and printed material, probably compiled by Albert Henry Warren. Some of the material relates to Warren's work on publishers' bindings. It is likely that some of the material may also emanate from Warren's apprenticeship with Owen Jones.
Drawings and tracings for binding designs are found throughout the volume. These include two tracings for the binding of Owen Jones' Fruits from the garden and field (1850). Title page and wrapper designs include work for Boyce's collection of Cathedral music (1849). There are numerous drawings for decorative borders, much of it on tracing paper.
Printed material includes 11 pictorial upper wrappers on green paper, for works published by J. & F. Tallis. The wrapper for Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (engraved by Emma Finden) is accompanied by two preparatory sketches elsewhere in the volume. Firms named on pieces in the scrapbook also include Huntley & Palmers, De La Rue, Longman, John Murray, and Blackie & Son.
Also present are posters and flyers, including an advertisement for "The Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, Grand Moving Panorama of the Nile" (1850) and for "Prout's Dioramic View of Australia ... in the Theatre of the Western Literary Institute, Leicester Square" (ca. 1850).
