Jean Toomer (1894-1967), poet, and novelist associated with the Harlem Renaissance.
Edith Taylor (1896- ), American socialite who was part of American expatriate literary circles in France, friend of Jean Toomer, follower of Georges Gurdjieff, and mother of Paul Beekman Taylor and Eve Chevalier.
Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (1872-1949), Russian-born mystic and spiritual teacher.
Summary
Photocopy of a typescript transcription of eight letters from Jean Toomer to Edith Taylor, dated 14 May 1926 to 10 October 1926. The majority of the letters were written from le Prieuré, Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff's chateau in France, in September and October. Toomer offers Taylor his counsel and writes of his feelings for her, describes a recent trip with Gurdjieff, mentions work on Gurdjieff's book, and discusses plans for his October 1926 trip to New York and reunion with Taylor. The editor A. R. (Alfred Richard) Orage is mentioned briefly. Accompanied by a 1979 letter from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., explaning the provenance.
