Tammat wa-bi-al-khayr ʻammat."
Translation of the author's colophon: "al-Qāsim ibn ʻAlī, may God Almighty be pleased with him, said: This is the last of the maqāmas which I conceitedly composed, and in the tongue of exigency dictated, as I was coerced to prepare them for display. I called out about them in the market of expostulation, though I knew they are worthless and something to be sold not to be bought. However, if I were to be engulfed in the light of success and look upon myself in the gaze of a compassionate, I should have covered my imperfection which was still hidden, but it was as if written in the Book. I ask God's forgiveness for what I introduced in them of nonsense prattle and falsehoods delusion. I seek His guidance to what protects from distraction and attains forgiveness. He is the source of piety and forgiveness, and the provider of blessings, here and in the Hereafter. It is completed. May it be well widespread."

Summary
Text of the well-known Maqāmāt (Orations, sessions, meetings); a genre of highly developed Arabic rhythmic prose intended to amuse and entertain, but also with critical social, moral and political undercurrents, by Abū Muḥammad al-Qāsim ibn ʻAlī al-Ḥarīrī al-Baṣrī (1054-1122), from al-Baṣrah (Iraq), one of the most celebrated and prolific authors of the 11th/12th centuries. The Maqāmāt are fifty in number and have been translated into many European and Oriental languages. They are also known by the titles: Maqāmāt al-Ḥarīrī and Maqāmāt Abī Zayd al-Surūjī (a fictitious character). Name of copyist and place and date of copying not mentioned, probably from the 18th century.
