Biographical / Historical Note
Dorothy Pym (1879-1966) was the daughter of Emily Mildred Thornton (1858-) and Charles Guy Pym (1841-1918). Her family home was Battersea Rise, built circa 1770 in the Clapham district of London, purchased by Henry Thornton (1760-1815) in 1792, and demolished in 1907. In 1910, Pym married Rowland Alison Alston (1888-1948), son of Rowland Crewe Alston (1852-1933). In 1933, Pym married Donald Degray Demarest (1895-1959).
Summary
Collection contains typescript writings and photograph albums by Dorothy Pym and other members of the Thornton family. Writings by Pym include: a transcription of her diary detailing aspects of her life and family in 1959; a biography of Pym’s mother, Emily Mildred Thornton; and books of unpublished essays, including The Blue Leather Book, And Go Not Often to the City, and Reflections of a Troglodyte. Two photograph albums include images of Battersea Rise; an unidentified home, possibly Pym's home in Brecon, Wales; unidentified individuals; and various dogs. Includes two typescript copies of Emily Mildred Pym’s book Battersea Rise, which documents the history of the Thornton family home and includes reproductions of photographs of Battersea Rise and various family members. Also includes bound typescript copies of letters from Rowland Crewe Alston to Rowland Alison Alston and Pym discussing family matters.
