Biographical / Historical Note
Henry McBride (1867-1962), art critic, wrote for The New York Sun, 1913-49, The Dial, 1920-1929, and The Art News, 1950-59. He also edited Creative Art, 1928-32, wrote Matisse (1928), and contributed introductions and biographical sketches to exhibition and sale catalogs.
Mary Peddle Peckham, born to Charles Rugan Peddle and Mary Elizabeth (Ball) Peddle of Indiana, married Paul Tyler Peckham (1884-1969) in 1911.
Summary
Thirteen autograph letters, ten initialed or signed, written when McBride and Peddle were in their early 20s and McBride resided in New York and taught at the Educational Alliance. Letters discuss music, art, Mary's stage name, daily activities, family, and friends, among other topics. Letters mention Mary's sister, the sculptor Caroline Peddle Ball, Mary's brother John B. Peddle, friends of McBride's, including Bryson Burroughs and Dudley Carpenter, members of the Pugh family, and many others.
