Biographical / Historical Note
Futurism was an avant-garde movement founded in Milan in 1909 by the Italian poet F. T. (Filippo Tommaso) Marinetti (1876-1944). The movement incorporated all aspects of the arts, including visual art, architecture, cinema, dance, design, literature, music, and theater.
Summary
The collection includes correspondence, writings, photographs, postcards, advertisements, and other printed documents relating to Italian Futurism in Italy and Egypt. The correspondence includes autograph manuscript letters and notes from: Anton Giulio Bragaglia; Rosa Rettagliata; Alberto Manca dell'Asinara; and F. T. Marinetti. Manuscripts include: an autograph manuscript poem, by Fulvio Tosoni, titled "Via Chiodo"; and a manuscript musical score in ten parts, in an unidentified hand, titled "Marcia 'Nelson'", housed in an envelope with the letterhead of Nelson Morpurgo in Cairo, Egypt. Photographs include: one black and white print, by an unidentified photographer, depicting a portrait of Nelson Morpurgo; five black and white prints, by unidentified photographers, depicting portraits of Vinicio Paladini; one black and white print, by an unidentified photographer, of Mimi Paladini in New York City; and a black and white negative by Ernesto Thayaht, titled "Guantoni da boxe".
Printed material includes: 19 postcards depicting artwork, designs, and photographs relating to Italian futurism; material relating to Nelson Morpurgo and Italian Futurism in Cairo, Egypt, including stationery, essays, and fliers and newspaper clippings concerning his play, Colonierie, at the Cairo Kursaal theater; admission tickets and a program for Futurist festivals, theatrical performances, dances, discussions, and other events at various venues in Italy; fliers featuring publishers' advertisements for works by F. T. Marinetti, Benedetta Marinetti Cappa, Fortunato Depero, and Maria Sara Goretti; and a booklet containing a calendar and a listing of the officers and other personnel of Divisione 6a of the Italian Esercito. Also includes single issues of two serials, Il 420 (April 15, 1916) and Il Secolo XX (June, 1928); a copy of a book of poems by Bruno Jasieński, Pieśń o głodźe (Krakow : Instytut Wydawńiczy "Ńezaleźnyh", 1922); and a copy of Gio Ponti, Il Coro (Milan : Edizioni di 'Uomo', 1944). Accompanied by dealer descriptions.
