Biographical / Historical Note
Rear Admiral Thomas Manby, who entered the Royal Navy in 1783, accompanied Capt. Vancouver on his exploration of the North Pacific Ocean 1790-95, serving as a mate on the Discovery and later as a master on the Chatham.
Summary
The journal contains two parts: the voyage from Deptford, London, around the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America; the search for the Northwest passage, exploring the Straits of Jan de Fuca, Nootka Sound, the Columbia River, San Francisco, and Monterey, then a winter in Hawaii and return to the American coast and Nootka Sound. Along with a description of the trip, the journal notes negotiations with the Spaniards and customs of Indians.
