Notes
In the back of the volume are notes on the Boston and California Pioneer, including some poems which Brackett wrote for the newspaper. There are also journal entries for November 29 through December 5th which are similar to entries for those date in the beginning of the volume.
Accompanied by a photocopy of the Boston Herald (first edition) in 1849 announcing the Brig Colorado "clearing" Boston Habor.

Summary
The journal records an 1849 voyage on the Brig Colorado for California. Entries consist of weather reports, longitude and latitude, and notes on the passenger's activities, including readings, debates, prayers, concerts, dances, singing, and a wedding. The passengers founded a weekly newspaper, the Boston and California Pioneer, and some of the men formed a club, the Independent Order of Owls. The diary describes their visits to St. Catherines Point, Bermuda and Valparaíso, Chile. The author keeps tract of ships met or sighted. The journal ends short of California, but on the West Coast of North America.
