Biographical / Historical Note
George Gibbs, a New York lawyer, joined the Regiment of Mounted Rifles in 1849, went to Fort Vancouver, Washington, and remained in the Pacific Northwest for the next eleven years. During that time he held a number of positions, including that of an ethnologist and geologist with the Northern Pacific segment of the U.S. Army railroad survey from 1853 to 1855, and the Northwest boundary survey of the Northwest Boundary Commission from 1857 to 1860. He wrote numerous works on Indian languages and the natural history of the Pacific Northwest.
Summary
Three holograph notebooks containing diary entries relating to travel; barometrical recordings; and observations on the languages and customs of the Indians and the flora and fauna of Washington Territory and the Pacific Northwest written while Gibbs was working on the U.S. Army railroad survey and the survey of the International Boundary Commission. The first two notebooks contain a few miscellaneous drawings. The volumes are entitled "Indian Tribes 1853-1854," "No. II Journal & Notes, N.W.B.S. 1855-1858," and "Washington Territory Miscellaneous, Chiefly Natural History [ca. 1857]."
