Videotape testimony of Aron S., who was born in Kolomyi︠a︡, Poland (presently Ukraine) in 1918. He recalls conflict with his Hasidic father over his Zionism; his father's death in 1930; the emigration of three sisters to the United States; antisemitic harassment; joining the Polish army; demobilization in Przemyśl; returning home; Soviet occupation; conscription into the Soviet army in May 1941; German invasion; marching through Chortkiv to Poltava; being wounded; eight months' recovery in a military hospital; working in the Ural mountains; re-mobilization; advancing to Berlin; not believing stories of atrocities against Jews; traveling to Perʹm after the war; deciding to repatriate to Poland; stopping in Brest, Łódź, and Szczecin; being advised to go to Germany; traveling to Schlachtensee displaced persons camp; teaching children there, then in Spandau; moving to Landsberg after the blockade; emigration to the United States in July 1949; marriage; and the births of three children. Mr. S. discusses problems with the children in the displaced persons camps and Jewish emphasis on education rather than revenge after the war.
