Biographical / Historical Note
George Aust was a clerk in the newly formed Foreign Service Office during the 1780s, with responsibility for drafting letters for George III's signature.
Summary
The papers contain thirty-five drafts of letters to various sovereigns and heads of state, nearly all credentialing or recalling ambassadors or containing formal condolences or congratulations on continuing health. Other correspondence consists of letters and letter drafts concerning Aust's employment disputes and wages.
