Summary
Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of over 100 sermons preached by John Bishop, rector of St. Colomb, dating from 1679, the year of his induction to the Rectory of Colomb, to his death. Topics include the origin of sin, Satanic influence, the personality of the devil, the parable of the tares, miracles, confession, and the Lord's Supper. The manuscript also includes numerous funeral sermons, as well as two pieces which refer to the murder of King Charles I: a sermon on Judas in vol. 7, and notes for a sermon in vol. 11 on the theme "Thou shalt not kill." In addition, the collection contains, dating from about 1660, various skeletons of sermons, school memoranda, meditations, prayers for pulpit use, notes for healthy living, and recipes.
