Summary
Manuscript commonplace book. Collection of political, cultural, and historical anecdotes on various topics, including: "the Union with Scotland;" parliaments and parliamentarians; a war with the French Republicans; a spring in France famous for its water's use in tanning and dying; a church in Styria; a fortress on Mt. Parnassus; the Polish origin of the custom of birthstones; tablets unearthed in Wales marking the preaching of St. Paul there in AD 48, as well as a later martyrdom and the death of a bishop, transcribed in latinized Welsh. Aso includes: epitaphs; a poem comparing Catholics to corn; comments on etiquette, and satires about social customs, including a mock-recipe for a successful party using "ingredients" like wit, politesse, flattery, and playing-cards; some recipes for puddings; anecdotes about water filtration and vegetable preservation; some prayers, hymns, and poems on love, nature, and friendship. Some items attributed to Pratt, to Mr. Burke, to William Beckford, and to Chauncy Hare Townsend.
