Summary
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 63 reports, speeches, letters, poems, and other prose pieces, primarily regarding Walker's tenure as a "Visitor" at the St. James's Sunday School in Manchester. The manuscript contains numerous reports on the missionary progress of the St. James's Church and Sunday School Missionary Association; a speech titled My teacher, spoken by one of the children at the Sunday school at the annual recital in 1817; and a speech praising the individual accomplishments of graduating girls who were about to enter into service. Walker also writes numerous letters to the students in his class, which include details of their personal situations and characters. To one, he notes his sorrow at her having had to leave Manchester due to want of employment; he comments to another on her emptiness of soul; and admonishes another on her imprudent attachment to a young man. An entry titled Sunday School Sketches consists of descriptions of several students' characters, tempers, and dedication to God. These entries are followed by versified Biblical excerpts; hymns; and excerpts from Virgil's Georgics, Dryden's Virgil, and Goldsmith's Citizen of the World. A poem titled The three crosses is accompanied by an illustrative drawing. Many of the entries have annotations indicating that they have been inserted in the Sunday Scholar's Magazine.
