Summary
Holograph diary of the writer's account of a tour through France and Italy. Beginning in Tivoli, the writer travels through Rome, Florence, Genoa, Nice, Aix, and other cities, ending in Geneva at the conclusion of the volume. Throughout the volume, the writer pays particular attention to the scenery and to historical events in the cities he visits. In Tivoli, the writer praises his rooms but dislikes the food; in Rome, he witnesses such Catholic practices as "pious whippings" and other penances; in Passignano, he describes an ancient battle engaged by Hannibal and his troops there; and, in Leghorn, notes the costume of a wealthy "Jewess" and visits a coral manufactory in the "Jews Quarter." In Genoa, he attends and critiques an opera performance of Cinderella; and complains of the discomfort of the saddles on his road trip to Noli, accompanied by a sketch of the saddle. In Nice, he eats a date for the first time; in Ferney, he attends the Fete de Oiseau established by Voltaire; and visits a college library where he examines some curious manuscripts and some original letters of John Calvin. The manuscript concludes with the writer's attendance at an "Olympic performance" of Cupid and Psyche at the theater. Both the beginning and end of the volume are incomplete.
