The majority of the material was transferred from the African Collection Curator. Some material was acquired by gift or purchase, including David Apter's political ephemera from Ghana and Uganda, Larry W. Bowman's material from pre-UDI Southern Rhodesia, and W. Vernon Brelsford's John Edward Stephenson (Chirupula) Papers.

Box 92, which contains photographs of South Africa by James P. Blair for National Geographic, may not be reproduced without permission from the magazine.
