Biographical / Historical Note
Konstantin Bal'mont (1867-1942), Russian poet and writer, was a member of the Symbolist movement and a major figure of the Silver Age of Russian poetry. He emigrated to France in 1920, where he lived until his death.
Dagmar Ernestovna Shakhovskoy (in Russian: Shakhovskaia), (née von Lilienfeld, 1893-1967), wife of Prince Fedor Sergeevich Shakhovskoi, was born in Estonia and emigrated to France in 1920.
Svetlana Shales (1925-), daughter of Konstantin Bal'mont and Dagmar Shakhovskoy.
Summary
The collection consists of family papers of Svetlana Shales. The papers document the relationship between Konstantin Bal'mont his two children (Georges, 1922-circa 1945, and Svetlana, 1925-). Additional family documents and correspondence document André de Lilienfeld's life as a monk in Belgium and Dagmar Shakhovskoy's relationship with de Lilienfeld (her brother) and mother. Personal documents and correspondence (Box 1) include material by or relating to Konstantin Bal'mont, Dagmar Shakhovskaia, André de Lilienfeld (né Otto Felix von Lilienfeld) and other members of the von Lilienfeld family. Photographs (Box 2) depict Svetlana Shales, Georges Shakovskoy, Dagmar Shakhovskoy, Konstantin Bal'mont, André de Lilienfeld and others. Glass negatives depicting Estonia before 1914 are stored in Box 3, Restricted Fragile Material. Nitrate negatives depicting Dagmar Shakhovskoy, Konstantin Bal'mont and others are stored in 4 (Cold storage). Oversize school photographs of Georges and Svetlana Bal'mont-Shakhovskoy are stored in a portfolio.
