Biographical / Historical Note
Timothy Mauleverer (1627-1685) was the son and heir of James Mauleverer, who fought as a colonel in the Parliamentary Army during the English Civil War and died an imprisoned bankrupt in York Castle in 1664. Timothy assumed control of the family estates after his father's 1651 bankruptcy, and spent much of his life attempting to restore the family's fortunes. He also experimented with alchemy. He married Elizabeth Metcalfe in 1650, and was succeeded on his death by his eldest son, Timothy.
The Mauleverer family held the manor of Ingleby Arncliffe in Yorkshire from the mid-sixteenth century until the death of Thomas Mauleverer without male heirs in 1785.
Summary
Manuscript, on paper, in a single secretary hand, of an account and memorandum book kept by Timothy Mauleverer of Ingleby Arncliffe during the first several years of his management of the family's estate. The majority of entries detail expenses and purchases, including disbursements to his father and other relatives; legal expenses; purchases of livestock; and a variety of personal expenses including clothing, pistols, "a coat with gold buttons," and books, some concerning alchemy. The volume also contains several entries relating to alchemy, including a recipe for a "weapon salve," "an unguent for staying blood," and a note "on the virtue of the celestiall stone."
