Biographical / Historical Note
John Johnston of Grange (1729?-1786), was the laird of three farms in Dumfrieshire, the largest of which was Grange. He practiced law in Edinburgh and was one of James Boswell's oldest friends. Johnston spent his later years struggling with his family's financial difficulties, and died unmarried at Grange in 1786.
Summary
Correspondence, financial papers, legal records, and other papers, documenting the business and financial concerns of John Johnston of Grange and members of his extended family. Box 1 contains records pertaining to John Johnston of Grange, including contracts, bonds and receipts; accounts, receipts and legal instruments concerning Johnston's management of the estate of his cousin Francis Scott; and several documents pertaining to the execution of Johnston's own will.
Boxes 2 and 3 contain papers documenting the financial difficulties of Thomas Johnston, John Johnston's brother; and one of Thomas's sons, William Johnston. The majority of the papers concern Thomas's increasing indebtedness and 1779 bankruptcy, as well as his attempts to settle with creditors. William Johnston's papers include several personal letters to his parents and from his cousin John, in addition to business correspondence and financial records. Box 4 contains an incomplete Bible which once belonged to Thomas Johnston.
