Biographical / Historical Note
The Rather Press was founded by Clifton Rather (1893-1987) in 1967. Much of the material he published was written by his wife Lois Marjorie Rodecape Foster Rather (1905-1996).
Robert Hawley (born 1929) was a bookseller specializing in Western Americana at the Holmes Book Company in Berkley, California, as well as an owner of Oyez Press and the Ross Valley Book Company, in Albany, California.
Summary
Correspondence and printed material chiefly addressed to Robert Hawley and related printed material that document his roles as a bookseller at the Holmes Book Company, 1971-1985. In particular it documents his trade with Clifton Rather and Lois Rather of the Rather Press and marketing their work to Archibald Hanna, the Curator of the Western Americana Collection in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale.
