Videotape testimony of Maria Gilda S., who was born in Sfax (Safāqis), Tunisia, in 1923. She describes her childhood in a prominent Jewish family, as the daughter of a shipping executive and granddaughter of a well-known politician; social, political, and religious life in an Italian enclave in the French protectorate of Tunisia; and the absence of prewar antisemitism. She tells of her family's Fascist sympathies; her brother's 1938 deportation to Italy by French colonial authorities; her brother-in-law's service in the French army in 1940; and the German occupation of Tunisia in late 1942. Mrs. S. recalls the imposition of antisemitic measures; Jews being hidden by Arabs for payment; liberation by Anglo-American forces; her brother's 1943 incarceration at "Regina Coeli" prison in Rome; his deportation to Auschwitz; the family's unsuccessful postwar efforts to discover his fate; her naturalization as a French citizen in 1947; and emigration to Grenoble, France in 1963.
