Biographical / Historical Note
Frédéric-Gaétan, marquis de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt (1779-1863), was a French philanthropist and reformer who took a particular interest in prison reform. He was appointed head of an experimental prison for young offenders by the Bourbons in 1814 and continued to advocate for penal reform throughout his career.
Summary
Manuscript, possibly in the hand of La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, of his version of the anonymously published A View of the New-York State Prison in the city of New-York (New York, 1815). Includes transcriptions of the statistical charts on prison demography and workshop productivity.
