Biographical / Historical Note
Isaac Blackbeard (1722-1788) was a barber and an Elder of the Whitby Friends Meeting for many years. He published a mystical pamphlet, Man's Own Book of Three Leaves, in Whitby in 1783.
Summary
Autograph manuscript containing fifteen religious and mystical pieces in prose and verse, several of which show the influence of Jacob Böhme. Titles include On Perfection; The Qualifying of the Five Senses; On the Cause, Consequence and Cure of Spiritual Pride; Arnelle Nicholas's Account of Herself, from the French; and Meditations and Contemplations. The volume concludes with a copy of Addison's hymn, When all Thy mercies, O My God.
