Summary (English)

Summary (English)

Side A: Franqui announces that his own show is the most heard clandestine program in Cuba. Cuba Independiente y Democrática - CID (An Independent and Democratic Cuba) is a pluralistic station with many different opinions and as a result is identified as the voice of information and Cubanía, or Cubanness. Franqui believes Cuba should have been liberated with the end of communism in the Soviet Union, but he proposes some reasons why this has not happened. One reason is the level at which Castro eliminates his rivals. Another is the fear many Cubans on the island have of the exiles, especially those in Miami who think they can return to claim the things that were theirs before the revolution. They discuss the culture of waiting that has been created, in which the armed forces and citizens on each side are waiting for someone else to rebel against the regime. According to the speakers, the Castro regime will not last much longer without Soviet support, and Castro is only prolonging Cuban suffering in the meantime.

Side B: Franqui discusses the so-called “special period” in Cuba now that it does not have the support of the Soviet Union. The speakers talk about the apartheid that separates tourists from Cubans, reducing Cubans to third-class citizens in their own country. They cannot go to the best beaches or tourist restaurants that only accept the dollar. Castro’s awful economic policies have encouraged prostitution on the island as the only way young students and professionals can earn a living. They then discuss passive dissidence, a product of the fact that the government does not allow official strikes. To conclude, they call for the government to implement economic privatization and allow the formation of political parties.
