Summary (English)

Summary (English)

Side A: Melero and Franqui comment the growing number of protests in Cuba. Melero reads a news piece about a rally in the classrooms of the Instituto Cívico Militar in Havana, which was the old Colegio de Belén and the elite school for the training of commanders for the armed forces. Franqui says that this school is a symbol of the institutional nature of Castro's regime. Melero says that it is a natural reaction to the irony of the use of the dollar in Cuba. He also says that recently in Cuba there have been heat waves, and the people have no way to keep cool. While they suffer, Fidel and Raúl Castro enjoy many fine products. Due to the use of the dollar, there has been an increase in prostitution, especially among youth, and the rate of AIDS has grown to alarming proportions.

Side B: A journalist reads news reports from Cuba. The themes he reports on are: the quantities of this year's rice harvest, the stopping of omnibus transportation, the charity work of the Catholic Church, the rise of religious practices, the concert of the Schola choral group in the Vatican and the Second International Colloquium at the Museum of the House of José Lezama Lima. After eight minutes and 45 seconds, there are several minutes of a program of Al cantío de un gallo, in which Franqui and Melero talk about the terrible hunger across Cuba. Franqui is surprised at the number of protest groups in the country, even among the churches of African religious sects, which shows him that the regime is weakening. The police are shooting at protestors for the slightest offense, as has been in the case of the young Julio Séfer Moreno.
