Biographical / Historical
Following a disastrous fire in May 1943 that destroyed the National Library of Peru, the American Secretary of State appointed a national Committee to Aid the National Library of Peru and the Geographical Society of Lima, with Archibald MacLeish as chair. Lewis was not a member of the committee, but was one of several emissaries sent to Lima to advise on a new library building, the rebuilding of the collections, and the training of professional staff. While he was in Peru for ten days in August 1943, he visited university libraries, held meetings with government ministers, and attended social events.
