Julia Ward Howe, American abolitionist, social activist, and poet.
Summary
Contains autograph letters, signed, from Julia Ward Howe to various individuals and drafts of poems. Poem drafts include a carbon copy of "A Cup of Tea;" an autograph manuscript of the last stanza of the poem "Battle Hymn of the Republic," signed and dated: Boston, 1881 November 15; a manuscript copy (possibly in her hand) of the poem "Consolation;" and three notebooks containing autograph manuscript poems. The notebooks are primarily in her hand but include the writing of several unidentified persons. One notebook includes clippings on Howe, dating 1869-1889, likely collected by her sister.
