Accompanying book includes: the essay "Doctor Jazz" by John Szwed (p. 2-41, with bibliography & discography on p. 79), details about the recording sessions & transfers, the current restoration & the new transcriptions of the spoken texts (p. 43-45), Morton's own 1938 writings about his life, taken chiefly from his unfinshed autobiography (p.47-71), & track details & other details (p. 72-77) laid in container.
Compact discs.
The Morton recordings were made by Lomax on fifty-four 78 rpm discs in May, June & Dec. 1938 in the Coolidge Auditorium, the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C; the contents of cd. 8 were taped by Lomax in 1948. The original discs of Morton have Archive of American Folk Song nos. 1638-1688 & 2487-2489. They were partially & selectively issued in 1947 on forty-five Circle 78 rpm discs, & in the 1950s on 12 Riverside 33 1/3 rpm discs. A partial issue on 4 compact discs was made in a previous Rounder Records box. This is the first unabridged issue of all the recordings (further details in book, p. 43-45).
