Summary
Videotape testimony of Alfred S., who was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1921. Mr. S. describes his family's strong sense of German identification and patriotism; the appearance of Nazis and antisemitism in his school; his growing sense of Jewish identity; alienation from his parents due to their refusal to recognize the danger of antisemitism; and participation in Jewish youth groups including Hashomer Hatzair. He recalls his father's death in 1934; non-Jewish friends protecting him from police; voluntary transfer to a Jewish school in 1936; attending the ORT school in Berlin from 1937 onward; Kristallnacht; legal dissolution of his youth group and ORT school; increasing danger for Jews; departing for England in August 1939 with a children's transport organized by ORT; and temporary internment in a camp until the ORT school was ready in Leeds. Mr. S. relates being classified as an enemy alien after Dunkerque; deportation to Australia; the kindness of the Australians; repatriation to England in 1943; return to ORT school; joining the military; reunion with his mother in France; working for the United States Army Intelligence; and emigration to the United States in 1947.
